And since the Elfstedentocht only occurs when the conditions are right, the annual boat race, Skûtsjesilen, held every August will certainly be enjoyed by the sports enthusiast. Or be sure to catch such other local sports as Kaatsen – a precursor to tennis dating back to the middle ages – and Fierljeppen – a literal translation of far-jumping where contestants compete jumping over ditches with a 10-foot pole.
